Die 12. U-Flottille wurde am 15.01.1942 als Frontflottille in Bordeaux geründet. Der Flottille, mit der Feldpostnummer M-47 587, waren fast ausschließlich Langstreckenboote zugeteilt, die im Südatlantik und im Indischen Ozean operierten.
